Mailspring 1.24.0 Snap: Password Management Error after upgrade; reverting to 1.23.0 fixes it

Description

After Span automatically updated Mailspring from 1.23.0 to 1.24.0, it immediately started showing a “Password Management Error” on launch. Reverting the Snap to 1.23.0 fixes the problem and all existing accounts work again without any reconfiguration.

Password / Secret Service checks

The Snap password-manager interface is connected:

password-manager-service mailspring:password-manager-service :password-manager-service -

The host Secret Service is working:

secret-tool store --label="Mailspring test" test mailspring
secret-tool lookup test mailspring

returns the stored password successfully.

org.freedesktop.secrets is available and owned by gnome-keyring-daemon.

KWallet is also running:

/usr/bin/kwalletd6

Both xdg-desktop-portal and plasma-xdg-desktop-portal-kde are active.

The Secret portal is available:

org.freedesktop.portal.Secret.RetrieveSecret

No result

These do not fix 1.24.0:

mailspring --password-store=kwallet5
mailspring --password-store=kwallet6

The system Secret Service itself appears healthy.

Workaround

Running:

sudo snap revert mailspring

reverts to Mailspring 1.23.0 revision 614.

After the revert, Mailspring starts normally and all existing accounts / credentials work again immediately.

No configuration, keyring, or account changes were made between testing 1.24.0 and reverting to 1.23.0.

This makes this appear to be a regression in Mailspring 1.24.0 / Snap revision 622 rather than a broken local keyring configuration.

Setup

  • Linux: Kubuntu
  • Desktop: KDE Plasma 6
  • Session: Wayland
  • Installation method: Snap
  • Working version: 1.23.0, revision 614
  • Broken version: 1.24.0, revision 622
  • Snap channel: latest/stable

After the update:

1.24.0-8e121c64

Snap revisions:

Name Version Rev Tracking Publisher Notes
mailspring 1.23.0 614 latest/stable foundry376✓ disabled
mailspring 1.24.0 622 latest/stable foundry376✓ -

Likely related to 1.2.4 Breaks Secret Service on KDE the changes made around it.

Same issue this morning on Kubuntu. Rolled back to so I can use mail.

I too wondered if it was initially my config but realised quickly there’d been an update to Mailspring

Please check if the latest Bugfix release fixes this.

Fixed now. It was tested on v1.24.1.
