Another new user - can’t use it now, knowing that there is no way to disable threaded view. Also SO many people say they don’t want it, and nobody to implement this, doesn’t bode well for the future of this fine application.
This application sadly has been on life support for roughly several years. The chances of this happening at this point are sadly slim to nil…
Is there any change in manpower? Could this 5 years old wish be implemented? Would be more than great.
I looked all over trying to find my “lost” emails. The threaded view is, IMO, useless and confusing,
and as someone else pointed out, is security risk.
Any hints on what I will have to do to turn it OFF? How much effort is involved?
Thanks,
Robert
Needs to be optional per mailbox, and off by default in search. It’s really hard to find emails is search results are threaded… particularly if you think your searching only send items for one account, and yours seeing lots of unread threads including emails from inbox….
Agree that threading needs to be optional, while it has it advantages, it also has many disadvantages.
Even Google gave into this one in Gmail.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ??? I cant imagine a sustained / prolonged use of Mailspring otherwise, and its by far the BEST mail app apart from this oversight.
Thanks in advance!!
Absolute a please add as soon as possible reply and vote. The threaded view is nothing anyone realy wants. i can see that the project is still active on github. give it a dropdown icon already in the overview with correct date next to mail header - not a extra tab with only the thread) or make a switch to disable the threaded view. its a pain to find a specific mail based on date. this has only 158 votes, but i have to say i nearly missed the vote button. the thread itself has like 10 k views and is one of the most read in here.
For those of you who don’t like the threaded view, which email client do you think has the most ideal non-threaded view?
Do you like to click on the email and see a tree with all the emails? Just click on it and see only that email?
They say it takes all kinds of people to make a world ![]()
I’m just one person, but email threading like Mailspring does it bring so much sanity to emails. Much more efficient, etc. I don’t get why anyone would do it any other way. But I get it. We’re all different. It’s OK ![]()
either the possibility to also use a non threaded view - or a dropdown - tree like view - already in the mail header view, i get it that you have that in the mail detail view, but that seems kinda weird as i do not know any other email client that has that kind of view. - so especially when you switch to mailspring from other clients its just hard to get a overview.
No, it is not sanity.
When searching mails in sent you get a list of “header mails” … not matching any criteria … you have to open each of them to find only a bunch of grey collapsed lines … each to open separately to find what you are looking for.
And scrolling the mails for a specific date will fail, when the mail you are looking for is part of a “conversation” …
So please make linear view and collapsed view chooseable.
In case you’re wondering why I’m asking, I thought maybe I could vibe code a plugin for this. I’m not sure if it’s possible, but I did have good success with some other things I wanted done.
Just to make sure I’m following. You want all mails to be grouped by thread in the list, but when you click, it expands to a list of mails in the list? And the message viewer/body area shows only that email with the quoted content below? This is how Outlook does it
No grouping by thread wanted/needed.
(only describing the behavior)
I am accuststomed to linear lists as mails are refered mostly inline anyway.
Let’s work on “unthreading”.
May be, all mails could be visible, even when part of a thread.
Don’t know the code yet, but somewhere the threaded mails are kicked out of the main list.
So if included in the main mail list, they may also be kept in the thread of the latest mail of a topic.
So we can have both … may be switched on and off according to everyones needs?
@bgit-adk Are you saying the issue you have is when using search to find an email?
Searching and browsing … as you do it in Outlook, Thunderbird, old Windows Mail.
It’s been a while since I used outlook as my daily driver. I took a shot at this, and here is the result. If this doesn’t do for you what you’d like it to. Please explain with screen shots, etc.

This layout is great but the threaded / unthreaded buttons seem to cover the “new message” icon in horizontal reading pane layout? It doesn’t seem possible to widen the folder area enough to get all the buttons back. In Vertical reading pane the threaded / unthreaded buttons disappear and the new message icon is back.

I added toggles to give more customization options. I moved the toggles to the right of the search bar.
When using Un-threaded and grouped, it will show you which messages have been deleted. This also adds the option to delete an individual message. Unthreaded and Ungrouped will make every email appear in the message list, and in the message/email viewer only that email will appear when clicked.
The trash icon is out of line a bit yet. Let me know if there are more issues.
If someone has better name suggestions for the different options, you could offer them ![]()

It seems like the buttons move depending on the horizontal and vertical reading pane and whether you have the sender information pane on - with this on the buttons are cut off on the side and the button for toggling the sender information disappears - you have to go into a vertical reading pane - and the threading buttons then disappear completely - to be able to to toggle the sender information pane and get the threaded buttons back to where they should be. I’m just using the default theme though - like the names and the new trash button!
Could you post screen snips with personal info blurred?
