Additional Context

Thanks a lot for the report. I will need to see how to reproduce this issue so that we can provide a fix.

This may also be having a similar cause as Tray icon now showing properly after update to 1.13

How to reproduce this issue:

  1. Edit → Preferences, check box Show icon menu bar / system tray
  2. Close Mailspring.
  3. Start program the icon appears in the menu bar
  4. Executing Quit Mailspring
  5. Start program we don’t see icon in menu bar

The bug was fixed, but reappeared in version 1.16.0-5339a49f. The procedure for reproducing the bug remains the same, as I wrote earlier.

My tray icon doesn’t show as intended, I get 3 dots, see picture. It changed 2 updates (or so) ago.

For those still experiencing tray icon issues – Mailspring 1.17.4 was just released and includes two relevant fixes: the tray icon was sometimes not initialized on app launch, and would appear invisible or as three dots “•••” for a long time before switching to the right icon.

There is also now proper dark/light system tray icon support on Linux (#2602). This should help with visibility across both light and dark desktop themes. Please update and let us know if your tray icon is now displaying correctly!

For anyone still experiencing tray icon issues on Linux, Mailspring 1.18.0 includes a fix for tray icon theme detection on GNOME/Unity desktops (#2610). Combined with the dark/light icon support and initialization fixes in 1.17.4, tray icon behavior should be much more reliable now.
